South Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk has set a new world record for the fastest century in a 50-over cricket match.
Although the 21-year-old had never scored in any form before Sunday, he needed just 29 balls to reach three figures, two fewer than South African star AB de Villiers did in an ODI in 2015.
The second fastest ton by an Australian in a one-day domestic match, scored by Luke Ronchi, was 22 tosses slower.
In total, the 21-year-old hit 23 boundaries, including 13 sixes. Before Sunday, he had hit just 18 sixes in the 49 games of his professional career.
Fraser-McGurk’s impressive innings finally ended when he hit Beau Webster’s off-spin at mid-wicket and was caught by Jake Weatherald.
Without him, the Redbacks were never able to fully exploit the flat Adelaide deck, but it still wasn’t enough to stop Tasmania defeating the Redbacks in the Marsh Cup by 37 runs.
After being sent to bat at Karen Rolton Oval on Sunday, the Tasmanian Tigers broke the competition record for highest total, with captain Jordan Silk contributing 116 runs of his 9-435.
Tasmania’s performance was 15 runs greater than the 420 managed by South Australia against Cricket Australia XI in 2016.
All-rounder Mitchell Owen was the pick of the bowlers for Tasmania, taking 3-46 including Daniel Drew (52) and Jake Lehmann (35) before they really got going.
The Redbacks scored a total of 398 in the 47th over, which was still the fifth highest total in Marsh Cup history and the highest not won.

Earlier, Silk helped steady Tasmania’s ship after openers Caleb Jewell (90) and Jake Weatherald (35) lost within two overs.
On a day of carnage, the 31-year-old showed his maturity by slowly moving through the nervous 90s before entering party mode after hitting triple figures.
His innings came to a halt in the 45th over when he tried to hit McAndrew for a 15th boundary but was caught by Ben Manenti at deep midwicket. Silk’s century was his first in 57 List A games.
The result comes after the Tigers lost their first two games to finish bottom of the ladder and leaves the Redbacks in the hunt for their first 50-over win of the summer.
