Big credit to Villa and Emery for their turnaround – Arteta
Aston Villa hosts Arsenal in a huge clash in the Premier League title race.
Unai Emery’s side extended their winning streak at Villa Park to 14 games as they beat Manchester City 1-0 in midweek. The result of this victory was a jump to third place in the table, ahead of the reigning champions and just four points ahead of the Gunners.
Elsewhere, Arsenal needed a dramatic injury-time winner from Declan Rice to take all three points in a seven-goal epic against struggling Luton.
Mikel Arteta says Emery has done a remarkable job at Villa and he expects another tough test when he takes on his Spanish compatriot today.

HT: Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal
The 22 players pick up a few oranges, Aston Villa retain their 1-0 lead, while Arsenal start to look dangerous after a slow start. The would-be league leaders fell behind early on when John McGinn finished things off with a wonderful, flowing move, and the game progressed well after that, with chances at both ends.
It feels like the balance is still in the balance, but as things stand, Villa Park’s long winning streak is still intact.

Ollie Watkins’ harassment of William Saliba forces the Arsenal man to make a loose pass and concede the softest of corners. There are still two minutes to play.

Martinez grabs the corner and falls, costing him some time as he clings to a sore muscle. It feels like Aston Villa needs the half-time break to restart.
Pau Torres came into some contact with Declan Rice on this corner kick. There wasn’t enough punishment in this incident, but it’s worth keeping an eye on to see if the altercation continues.

However, this passage was completely against the course of the game. Oleksandr Zinchenko’s rapid pass is intercepted by Gabriel Jesus, who shoots sharply. Emiliano Martinez hits him backwards.

Big opportunity for Ollie Watkins! The flag is up but I believe William Saliba played on as striker, meaning Watkins must be rueing his inability to beat David Raya as the Spanish goalkeeper closes the space. Watkins tried to pass the ball through the goalkeeper but was unable to push it through.

Great stop! Excellent game from Arsenal, top equipment. Martin Odegaard is beaten down on the edge of the penalty area and drives on with his left foot to find the bottom corner. However, Martinez realizes his intentions and goes sharply to the right, both saving and clinching to ensure the visitors cannot capitalize on a potential follow-up.
Mikel Arteta angrily scribbles some notes in his book.

Cleared out of line! Important defensive work from Diego Carlos, who helped his goalkeeper after Emiliano Martinez hurriedly left his goal to get to a bouncing ball. Gabriel Martinelli got ahead of him and deftly steered the ball over the slipping World Cup winner, but the retreating Carlos was immediately back and knocked the ball away.
Martinelli may have simply been offside during the review – but the flag didn’t go up.

Simply wide! Ben White and Saka pass the ball inside to Martin Odegaard, who directs his shot to the near post while Martinez remains unobserved. Not quite precise enough – the side mesh is gathered.
