Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is being investigated by cricket bosses after an “incident” in Adelaide that led to him being taken to hospital.
Just hours after he was ruled out of the upcoming one-day series due to “management”, it was confirmed that Maxwell is the focus of a Cricket Australia investigation.
The 35-year-old was in Adelaide for a golf match towards the end of Australia’s first Test against the West Indies following the end of the Melbourne Stars’ Big Bash League season.
Australian Associated Press understands Maxwell was at a Six & Out concert on Friday, January 19, the evening in question.
Australian captain Pat Cummins and other members of the Test team such as Steve Smith and Alex Carey were also in attendance at The Gov, a popular live music venue in Adelaide.
Six & Out is a band consisting of former New South Wales and Australian cricketers Brett Lee, Shane Lee, Richard Chee Quee, Gavin Robertson and Brad McNamara.
Police were never involved, but CA has confirmed it will investigate.
“Cricket Australia is aware of an incident involving Glenn Maxwell in Adelaide over the weekend and is seeking further information,” a CA spokesman said.
“It has nothing to do with him being replaced in the ODI squad, a decision taken following the BBL and based on his individual management plan.”
“Maxwell is expected to return for the T20 series.”
Despite not having played a Test since 2017, Maxwell will sit out the one-day series while red-ball stars Steve Smith, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green step in for the white-ball games against the West Indies.
It is the latest in a series of bizarre mishaps for one of the heroes of Australia’s stunning 50-over World Cup victory in India last year, where his astonishing unbeaten record of 201 saved his team from almost certain defeat against Afghanistan.
During that tournament, Maxwell suffered a concussion after falling from a golf cart and missed the game against England.
In November 2022, Maxwell broke his leg when he slipped at a birthday party while pretending to chase a friend.
The incident cost him a place in the Australian Test team for a tour of India. This season he was also excluded from the entire BBL.
