When asked if any teammates signaled to him that they were uncomfortable, Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau responded 32 thoughts“Not a single person.”

“It was (Babcock’s) way of getting to know me, and I got to know him,” the winger told Friedman and Jeff Marek. “I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all. I showed him pictures of my family. If I had a problem with it, I would have said, ‘I don’t think I’m happy with it.’ But I didn’t have a problem with it.”

Babcock had been absent from NHL locker rooms since being released by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019. He signed a two-year, $8 million contract this summer, making him the highest-paid coach in Blue Jackets history.

Babcock’s coaching methods in Detroit and Toronto, particularly his handling of Johan Franzen and Mitch Marner, had come under criticism. But the Stanley Cup and Olympic champion arrived in Columbus promising to open communication with his players while keeping mental health in mind.

Babcock, 60, said he gets help in that department from an expert at Ohio State University and talks to each Blue Jacket about what’s best for them.
